Dr. Portnoy is a board certified neurosurgeon with extensive experience in both adult and pediatric neurosurgery including the treatment of brain and spinal tumors, cerebrovascular disease, pediatric neurosurgical diseases and minimally invasive surgery for herniated disc and spinal stenosis. He is a world-recognized authority in the treatment of childhood and adult hydrocephalus (water on the brain) for which he received the Robert H. Pudenz Award for Excellence in CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) Physiology.
Dr. Portnoy has spent nearly forty years in the practice of neurosurgery in southeast Michigan and is the senior member of the Michigan Head and Spine Institute (MHSI). He is Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery and Director of Research at MHSI. Dr. Portnoy is Attending Neurosurgeon at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (Pontiac), Crittenton Hospital Medical Center (Rochester) and North Oakland Medical Center (Pontiac).
A native Michigander, Dr. Portnoy grew up in Detroit and attended Wayne State University and the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His neurosurgical training was with the well-known Dr. E.S. Gurdjian, one of the first neurosurgeons in Michigan. On completion of his residency training, Dr. Portnoy went into the private practice of neurosurgery in Pontiac while maintaining academic positions that included Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Wayne State University and Clinical Professor of Medical Physics at Oakland University. He has continued life long, basic research related to brain function, hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure.
