St Joseph Mercy Oakland Stroke Center
In 2004, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) became the first health care institution in Michigan to receive Primary Stroke Center Certification by the The Joint Commission
. The treatment of stroke is viewed at SJMO as a medical emergency that requires rapid initial evaluation and prompt medical intervention. St. Joseph Mercy Oakland is a Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) and has acquired the dedicated personnel and physician expertise to diagnose and treat complex stroke patients who require high intensity medical and surgical care.
SJMOs Emergency Center is the gateway to the Stroke Center. The highly specialized medical team is trained in rapid triage, assessment and advanced stroke care management. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology including 64-slice CT scanner, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), remote presence robotics, ultrasound and Transcranial Doppler monitoring, the Emergency Center assists in providing some of the most advanced care to stroke patients in the nation. The SJMO Emergency Center includes:
Michigan Stroke Network Robotics
- 39 private treatment cubicles
- 19-bed Clinical Decision Unit
- 2 resuscitation bays
- DECON room
- Interdepartmental X-ray suite
- Electronic medical record and patient tracking
- Board-certified emergency physicians
At SJMO the remote-presence robot allows Michigan Stroke Network (MSN) physicians to cross the state of Michigan with one-on-one visual 2-way consultation and interaction.
The MSN specialist has the ability to be at the patient's bedside by remote presence, for consultation with the patient's physician and family.
The 2-way interactive capability of the robot allows the MSN physician to perform a neurological assessment that has the function to visualize
the size and shape of the patient's pupils if necessary.
The Internet connection allows the MSN specialist to review diagnostic tests performed on the stroke patient such as: CT and CT Perfusion scans,
EKG monitoring and laboratory results- 24/7, 365 days a year. The robot has become a tool to provide prompt access to advanced stroke care to stroke patients who are
candidates for specialized testing and therapies, or those requiring multispecialty stroke management.
Neurovascular Specials Laboratory
The neuroendovascular suite or "cath lab", is a specialized department for diagnostic and neuro-interventional procedures.
The lab provides state-of-the-art digital imaging equipment that visualizes and detects neurovascular disorders of the brain and spine.
The images are stored in the system as a reference for immediate or later treatment plans of the disease process.
The Stroke Center at St. Joseph's Mercy Oakland includes the emergency department, adult intensive care unit, the stroke unit and rehabilitation unit including onsite sub-acute care. Nursing and medical staffs are specialty trained in comprehensive stroke assessment utilizing the National Institute of Stroke Assessment Tool (NIHSS) to optimize clinical assessment and communication between health care providers.
Adult Intensive Care Unit
The SJMO Intensive Care Unit or ICU specializes in providing comprehensive and continuous care for critically ill patients. Staffing consists of Critical Care Intensavists, Internal medicine physicians and nurses. SJMO utilizes evidence based practice standards to improve the care of patients with stroke and cerebrovascular disease.
